From Junior to Senior

Junior developers typically know one or two languages and work under supervision. Salaries start around R30,000–R40,000/month.

Mid-level developers work independently, own features end-to-end, and mentor juniors. This is where salaries jump significantly, often R50,000–R65,000/month.

Senior developers architect systems, make technical decisions and lead projects. R75,000–R100,000/month is common, especially in fintech and at companies serving international clients.

Remote Work & Earning in USD

The biggest salary multiplier for SA developers is working remotely for international companies that pay in USD, EUR or GBP. A senior developer earning $4,000–$8,000/month from a US or European company can dramatically outearn local equivalents.

Tax note: If you are a South African tax resident, you are taxed on your worldwide income — including foreign earnings. You must declare USD income to SARS, though foreign tax credits and the foreign employment income exemption may apply. Consult a tax practitioner if you earn from abroad.

Many SA developers working for foreign companies operate as independent contractors, which means they are responsible for their own provisional tax. Our freelancer tax calculator can help estimate what to set aside.
